AWS carries the tape while Roblox and Reddit get repriced

Amazon's surge offsets an Apple decline in Nasdaq futures and data-center demand lifts Fuji Electric 38%, even as four brokers cut Roblox on monetization and Sony's own numbers justify killing the disc.

July 31, 2026 AI & Tech

The cloud-and-power complex is the whole trade

Nasdaq 100 futures led U.S. index gains with an Amazon surge offsetting an Apple decline, and Telsey raised its Amazon target to $335 on AWS strength — the index is being carried by one name's cloud line. The read-through runs down the supply chain: Fuji Electric's Q1 FY2026 profit jumped 38% to a record on data center demand and an Energy-segment surge, and Compass Datacenters is standing up Mississippi's first data center workforce training program alongside a $10 billion digital infrastructure investment in Meridian. Interpretation: the AI capex cycle is now visible in industrial earnings and in local labor programs, not just in hyperscaler commentary.

Consumer internet is being marked down on monetization, not usage

Roblox drew a coordinated de-rating: Barclays cut its target on a bookings miss, BTIG downgraded to Sell on monetization concerns, and DA Davidson and Canaccord both cut targets on growth and monetization. Reddit shows the mirror image of the same debate — Evercore ISI cut its target to $265 on valuation, Citizens reiterated on strong results despite a user decline, and DA Davidson reiterated on the user engagement strategy. The common thread is that engagement narratives are no longer clearing valuation on their own; the desk wants revenue per user.

Sony's disc numbers settle the argument

Sony is pressing ahead with ending physical PlayStation disc production by January 2028 despite a fan backlash and a week-long content blackout organized for August 23, with CFO Lin Tao saying the company will "cautiously move this forward" because "digitalization is progressing." The earnings math is decisive: physical games brought in just over $781 million in fiscal 2025 against roughly $6.5 billion in digital game sales and about $8.4 billion in in-game purchases. Sony has already begun repurposing its disc-manufacturing headquarters for optical microlenses — the capacity decision is effectively irreversible.

Autonomy: capital in, regulator on the other side

Atlas Energy is expanding its autonomous truck fleet to 100 vehicles and William Blair reiterated Outperform on SpaceX after a guidance raise, while the U.S. auto safety regulator opened a probe into 1.2 million Tesla vehicles over suspension failures. Also in the silicon layer, ECARX-backed SiEngine secured $200 million in equity financing for automotive semiconductors and Valens Semiconductor named Dean Martin to head its automotive business unit. Interpretation: funding and fleet scale-up are running well ahead of the regulatory verdict on the installed base.
