Cost lines beat, revenue lines don't — and guidance is doing the talking

AutoNation and LyondellBasell topped EPS while missing on revenue, but Newell, BrightSpring and Lear raised outlooks, and European banks delivered the cleanest quarter of the batch.

July 31, 2026 Earnings

The beat-and-miss pattern is a margin story

AutoNation beat by $0.12 and LyondellBasell by a striking $0.97, yet both fell short on revenue — the signature of cost control and mix outrunning demand. The counterexamples are consumer names: Church & Dwight merely matched on EPS but topped on revenue, while Carter's beat by $0.20 with revenue also ahead. WisdomTree beat by $0.05 with revenue above estimates. Interpretation: where the top line is soft, the earnings are being manufactured below the revenue line, which is a harder trick to repeat.

Raised outlooks are the differentiator

Newell Brands stock soared 10% on a strong beat and a raised outlook, BrightSpring Health beat Q2 estimates and lifted guidance, and Lear raised the midpoints of its full-year 2026 outlook. Melrose is the caution: H1 2026 profit rose, but the garden grove issue clouds the outlook. The market is clearly paying up for forward numbers rather than for the printed quarter.

European banks had the quarter

Crédit Agricole posted record Q2 revenue alongside an AI push and a dividend, Alpha Bank's transformation was driven by a surge in fee income, and Bank of Ireland raised its 2026 profit outlook on lower impairments. Three different drivers — revenue scale, fee mix, and credit costs — all pointing the same direction. Interpretation: falling impairments plus fee-led growth is a more durable combination than rate-driven margin, and it is showing up across geographies rather than at one bank.

Balance sheets over payouts

TELUS reset its quarterly dividend to $0.1875 Canadian per share and will remove the dividend reinvestment plan discount effective October 1, 2026, explicitly to support deleveraging toward 3.0-times or lower by year-end 2028 — a rare case of a telecom choosing leverage repair over payout optics. Enbridge went the other way, reaffirming 2026 guidance and growing its secured backlog to $41 billion. TXNM Energy beat by $0.03 with revenue ahead, reporting GAAP earnings of $0.64 and ongoing earnings of $0.58 per diluted share, with its TNMP rate increase approved and its acquisition agreement extended. BorgWarner declared a quarterly dividend of $0.17 per share payable September 15.
